Serving Individuals and Families Primary immune deficiency disorders are caused by inborn defects in the cells and tissues of the immune system. Most of these disorders are "genetically determined" and therefore inherited. So, what is a "genetic" disorder? What does this mean for you and your family members? Will you pass this on to your children? Does this mean genetic testing is available for you or your family member? If so, should you have it done and what will it tell you? What is gene therapy and can this be done for your disorder? How can you learn more about the genetic aspects of your disorder? These are all common questions that arise when an individual learns that the disorder he or she has is "genetic". This section should provide the answers to these questions as well as explain some basic information about genetic concepts. If you need additional information contact IDF at (800) 296-4433 or by email at idf@primaryimmune.org. |
